Welcome to melodi Music
“The word ‘Melodi’ is Setswana for ‘whistling’. From an early age, we learn to make this sound – one of our first attempts at music. And for some, whistling is the only way that they will ever be able to express themselves musically.
Founded by Nimrod Moloto in April 2002, the Melodi Music Trust aims to ensure that whistling is not the only musical opportunity that South African children from previously disadvantaged communities have. By teaching children how to read and perform music, it brings joy into their lives.
For its initial seven years of operation, the Trust worked exclusively from its base at St Andrews Anglican Church in Zone 2 Pimville, Soweto. In 2008, in an effort to reach even more children who wouldn’t otherwise have been able to access the project, it also expanded to 11 primary schools in Soweto: Makhoarane Primary School (Dobsonville), Albertina Sisulu Multi Purpose Centre and Rebongwe Primary School (Meadowlands), Sapebuso Higher Primary and Molemo Primary School (Orlando West), Ditawana Primary School (Orlando East), Dumezweni, Boepakitso, Vulamazibuko, Lourdes and Nandi Primary Schools (Diepkloof) and the music project in Pimville. As a result, the Trust is currently able to extend its hand to over 1530 pupils, aged between 8 and 20.
The Trust's holistic music programme has been welcomed by learners, teachers and strongly supported by the principals of the schools that Melodi is involved with. The Trust has a waiting list of principals that have asked for Melodi’s music programme to be brought to their schools
The Trust is a registered Not for Profit Organisation that relies entirely on donations and sponsorships to continue and expand its programme. |
