Eligibility & Classes

All students who are registered with the Trust start their musical education by receiving a recorder, which is theirs for the duration of their tuition. Students must be at least 8 years old to enrol with the Trust and may stay a member until they finish their tertiary education.

Each class takes a maximum of 40 pupils. Classes run during and after school hours, 7 days a week, in Soweto. As pupils advance, they receive private lessons during the week and once they have reached a sufficient playing level for the recorder, they have the opportunity to advance to an orchestral instrument of their choice.

Irrespective of the orchestral instruments that they select, all pupils at this level are required to concentrate on, and undergo, formal music examinations at least once a year.
